O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie!

Above your deep and dreamless sleep,

The silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

The everlasting Light,

The hopes and fears of all the years,

Are met in thee tonight.

美哉聖城，小伯利恆，你是何等寧靜；

For Christ is born of Mary,

And gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wondering love.

因馬利亞誕生聖嬰，天軍雲集天空，

寒夜已深，眾生安眠，天使護衛愛羡；

天上晨星同宣告聖誕神聖佳音，

天上榮耀歸與真神，地上平安歸人。

How silently, how silently,

The wondrous Gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts

The blessings of His heaven.

No ear may hear His coming,

何等安寧，何等恬靜，真神賜奇妙恩，

伯利恆城至聖嬰孩，我們求你降臨，

除去我心一切罪孽，降生在我心中；

我聽聖誕之天使宣告大喜佳音，

懇求以馬內利我王，永遠居住我心。

「小伯利恒」一诗乃 Phillips Brooks 写于 1868 年，也是他从圣地旅游回来数年后，对那次在伯利恒过圣诞夜的经验，印象相当深刻。正好在其所牧养的费城圣三一教会，需要一首圣诞诗歌给主日学儿童报佳音之用，于是数年前游历伯利恒的回忆，在他笔下就形成了此首有名的圣诗。 Brooks 牧师请该教会的风琴师兼主日学校长 Lewis H.. Redner 为他所作的诗配上曲，并要求他用简单容易让孩子唱的曲子。虽然 Brooks 还作了许多圣诞和复活节之诗歌，但唯有此首流传至今。

Phillips Brooks 1835 年生于麻州波士顿，神学院毕业后，长时期牧养教会，最后被派任为麻州的圣公会主教。是美国杰出的传道者 ─「讲台王子」，所着众多之讲道集，成为美国古典文学之珍藏品。
