I. Lily Wu - Health Sciences Graduate and MD Candidate
More comprehensive list: https://bhsc.mcmaster.ca/current-students/post-grad/
- Professional school (e.g. medical, dental, law)
- Graduate studies (e.g. master’s in science, engineering)
- Employment (e.g. research)
II. Kendra Zhang - QuArms and MD Candidate
III. Dominique Jiang - Biology
IV. Lois Chui - Nursing Graduate
Lois
Hi, I want to know how hard is it to get into McMaster? I heard their healthcare related programs are all extremely competitive and require averages of 95+
答: Different programs have different requirements, but for health sciences, the minimum average is 90%
问:what high school achievements do you recommend to get into Medical programs? Is there like a “minimum amount” of extracurricular that you need to have in order to increase your chances of getting in?
答:There’s not necessarily a minimum amount of extracurricular you need! If you only have a few commitments but you are very dedicated to them/have leadership roles, that’s more valuable than having a lot of commitments that you’re not as much of a leader in
问: Also, in university, is it "unofficially mandatory" to do a sport ^during high school? (I suck at sports)
答:It is not mandatory to do a sport :). No you don't have to do sports! Again, don't force yourself to do things you don't want to do. There are no "required" extracurricular that medical schools want. There is no formula for activities to get into medical school!!
问: Were you all in special programs (such as AP or IB)?
答:Nope, I was doing only normal courses [Some did AP or IB,but there are also normal program that are accepted to Health Sciences.]
问:Any tips for high school student to participate in science research?
volunteer for the causes that you personally feel strongly about! There isn’t a formula for causes you should volunteer for
答: There are a number of opportunities for high school students to do research! Make sure to do your research online and apply :) for example, Hamilton Health Sciences Research Bursary Awards
问:If not pursuing a nursing career, what are some paths a nursing degree can lead to and when admitting NP candidates, is there a preference for what kind of unit you are in?
答:A nursing degree can lead you to other masters programs such as, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, many people also pursue medical school after their nursing degree. The prerequisite for NP is a minimum of 2 years of full-time hours worth of registered nursing practice. The reason for this is because schools want you to have nursing experience before you pursue further education. There is no preference for what kind of unit you are on!
问:Was it hard to get into a veterinarian program?
答:I'm not in the prograIm yet but the application process is well laid out on Guelph's website. It is very similar to med school so you have to submit your transcript, references and supplementary applications. After that you go through multiple mini interviews. It definitely is a lot of work but it is worth it if that is your passion.
问:Is it true that there is a very little chance for international students to get into medical school?
答:Definitely not true, it may be more expensive but the important factors are grades and experience.
